Having spent much time at the anvil, forging steel for specific site projects, my work is now more concerned with collage and with making frameworks and structures in which ‘to house’ found objects and odd pieces of farm machinery.
I’m interested in the positional displacement of objects and am trying to make some kind of sense of their subsequent relocation.
I like to work with simple geometric shapes often joined together in a sequence (as a set of things belonging next to one another on some principle of order).
In my recent sculpture I combine sections of scrap steel plate and bar to construct vertical forms that are both open-ended and self-enclosing at the same time. I leave all the wear and tear of the surfaces relatively untouched so that a record of their past condition is transfered to the new work.
